On 10 June 2026, the members of the Association of German Family Organisations (AGF) met for an exchange of thoughts on the topic ‘Children and young people in the digital world – families between participation, empowerment and protection’. The aim of the discussion was to discuss own perspectives and common long-term positions on the topic.
The discussion initially centred on the question of the significance of digital media and services today for the upbringing of children and young people, as well as for family life. The opportunities offered by digital participation in education, communication and social engagement were discussed, as were the risks associated with digital environments, such as mechanisms that encourage addiction, problematic content, data protection risks, commercial interests and digital violence.
Another key focus was the role of families in balancing participation, empowerment and protection. The managing directors emphasised the central importance of families for the digital socialisation of children and young people, whilst also pointing out that families must not be left to face the challenges of digital environments on their own. Digital literacy, media education and counselling and support services for families were highlighted as important prerequisites for self-determined and age-appropriate media use.
Finally, the discussion turned to the responsibility borne by digital service providers and policy-makers for creating safe digital environments. The managing directors exchanged views on issues including data protection, platform regulation, dealing with digital violence, the participation of children and young people in shaping digital environments, and the requirements for digital services that are age-appropriate and compliant with children’s rights. The discussions will be incorporated into the drafting of an AGF paper on the subject.
